Ome Ome

Cosy Japanese familyrun drinking placeVery good Saito fried chicken Very interesting Ise udonGreat for casual drinks and snacks!Recommended!Sake bar?Of all hangovers, I believe sake hangover is definitely THE worst! It gives you the most painful headache EVER and it lasts for ages even a counter beer the next day will not do the trick. I'm speaking from...*ahem* ... rather "comprehensive" personal experiences. . This is why I've always steered clear of sake bars in the past. This shop caught my attention when it first poped up on Openrice. I've walked past this shop a number of times and was attracted by the cosy, homey atmosphere, as well as the sochu. Apparently, they also serve Ise Udon. So I went there with some friends on a Sunday a few weeks ago but it was closed (it's closed every Sunday. )Finally managed to visit the place:Artist at work:It's not a very big place. What you see from the outside is what you get. Not too many tables. Two big tatami table for 910. One big wooden table for 6 an two small tables for 2 persons. I understand from other reviewers that the owner of OME OME painted these himself:Cool! The effect was wonderful. An open kitchen at the far end of the place, a bookshelf between the two big tatami tables and a big TV showing Japanese TV shows. Very cozy. It certainly felt like being in a holeinthe wall drinking place in Japan (somehow those owners tend to be Bob Marley fans, very chilled very, if you see what I mean ) Even if it was just the two of us, they didn't mind were we sit. We sat at one of the large wooden tables.Menurinks:Sake: Decent selection of sake, all choice of bottle or by 180ml. Sochu: Around 15 types of Sochuincluding KEKEKE no Kitaro !! Kitaro's eyeball father and Sekitoba! Awamori: One type of Awamori (special type of alcohol only from Okinawa). Red & White: A decent selection (about 10 of each) of red and white. Some of the reds were from Macedonia!? And another bottle possibly from Eastern Europe. Reasonably priced.(Can't remember whether they had beer or not. Probably.)Snacks:A small selection of food to go with your drinks such as:1. Otsumami set: Edamame, Pickled Garlic, Bamboo Shoots, Kimchi and Dried Chili Squid (you could order the whole set for $90 or just separately for $30 each);2. Sausage Platter with Cheese and Herbs;3. Italian/Japanese style Horse Mackerel sashimi ($100)4. Saito style Fried Chicken ($60) and5. Ise Udon ($60) (and a few others.) I was immediately attracted to "GeGeGe no Kitaro" (Imo, i.e. yam, sochu). It's one of my favorite childhood animes, so that's what I ordered. My wife ordered a glass of Awamori. On the rocks for both. ( You could choose to add ice, cold water, hot water or straight.)Wow, this sochu was strong! An intense aftertaste but not as aromatic as I had hoped. I'll definitely suggest adding water (possibly warm water to bring out more flavour). It's HK$60 for a pretty substantial glass of sochu with honest amount of Sochu unlike some shops I've been to in which the glass only contained 10% Sochu but at almost double the price (eg. one near Knutsford Terrace). As you could see from the tumbler, it was a big glass of sochu even discounting the few ice cubes. Definitely ask for a small jug of water to mix it with. My wife was happy with her Awamori. Awamori is made in Okinawa only. It usually taste very creamy and a little bit like whiskey. Strong stuff (about 3540 proof)!おつまみtsumami means "food to go with alcohol". We ordered some food to go with our drinks. First the otsumami set:1. Edamame: Normal appetizer size. Broiled in salted water but no salt on the outside.2. Pickled Garlic: It's pickled in bonito and shoyu. It doesn't taste that garlicky. Perfect with sochu.3. Bamboo Shoots: Tasted like the normal bamboo shoots preserved in chili oil from Taiwan. Possible exactly those. No complaints.4. Kimchi: A small dish of kimchi, quite hot! Nice and crunchy.5. Dried Chili Squid: Again, looked and tasted like a Taiwan style snack. Again, no complaints.Although these are all easily available food products, HK$90 for these dishes look "good" on your table. It's simple but good Otsumami to have when you're having a casual chat with friends. Simple and relatively reasonable since you're given a comfortable place to sit and drink. Saito style Chicken:Freshly prepared in the open kitchen by the Japanese mother of the family. Is her surname Saito? It might be the name of a special recipe like "Kameda" . (I'll keep you posted if I find it.)This is simply excellent! The batter was very nice. It's a bit light and fluffy but very crunchy. It's similar to the very good "Kameda fried chicken" like you get at Hakata Dojo but even better because the chicken was marinated better here. The chicken meat was tender and flavourful. Well marinated with a bit of salt and pepper, a bit of lemon juice and shoyu. It's cut into convenient bite size pieces. Decent amount for HK$60.Highly recommended. Sekitoba:A while later I found Sekitoba! The is the normal brand so not as aromatic as those I've tried in Japan. It's still decent. I forgot to add hot water this time which , according to the company, is the suggested method of drinking it. Again, it's an honest amount of sochu also served in a colourful tumbler. Ise Udon:I went to Ise (pronounced as E se ) last year and tried Ise udon. It's obvious that it's a signature dish of that region. Wasabi is also very famous there.Essentially its warm udon. The Ise part is the special sauce placed on the udon, which is a mixture of fish dashi, a sweet type of shoyu with a lot of konbu extract as well as some chopped banno negi (Japanese spring onions). Another key point is that the udon is supposed to be softer than most udon. So don't expect it to be very chewy.Since this appears to be the only place in Hong Kong which serves Ise udon. I was very curious about it. Again, I noticed that the chef was preparing the sauce and then heating the whole mixture up. A while later the udon arrived. This certainly looked authentic enough. The quality of the udon was fine. I'd prefer if it was more chewy or even chilled but soft udon is the more authentic version. The spring onion was OK, not really that spicy. Still good. The sauce was very similar to what I had at Ise but perhaps with some egg white added into the mixture. This is because I find the texture slightly thicker than what I had before. This is a good as the sauce could hang on to the udon much more easily.Actually, the focus of Ise Udon is on the nice konbu aftertaste rather than the udon. OME OME did a good job. Worth a try! Serviceolite and friendly service. Since it's a family run business, it seemed that the mother was the chef, the father was the general manager, the chilled big sister was helping out.The little brother was calmly minding his own business in front of the computer and the super cute little sister was running around the whole shop most of the time. Conclusion:The bill came down to about HK$150 per head, which I think is very reasonable. Excellent Saito Chicken; Interesting Ise Udon; Artistic and comfy Japanese drinking place at a convenient location; Good service; Reasonable price.Whenever I feel like a sochu instead of my usual Guinness, I might have it here.Highly recommended.Post script:1. おめぇ OMe 【Rude "You" 流氓腔: 你】すげぇ SUGEe【 Rude: Great! 2. The introduction to OME OME makes very interesting reading:Essentially, it's a humble statement that they don't have to money to buy very expensive tuna, they don't have a grand selection of sake or even a decent selection of food, however, OME OME still wish to do the best they can to provide a comfortable drinking place for customers. They hope that one day, despite their shortcomings, a customer would say, "Well, I can't help it. I just like drinking at OME OME."Well, I'll be back. Often

A New Japanese Bar in TST 山林道 There are a few Japanese shops on this street, but apart from the one which closed down last year, only 新大壽日本料理店 New Kotobuki and here actually have Japanese chefs. *I absolutely dislike New Kotobuki 新大壽 though despite claiming to use a 30 years old recipe from the mom's recipes,I really can't stand many of the amateurish dishes served there and with the super fishy Mackerel sushi. .House Made Coffee Shochu Sounded exotic enough. But do u want the polite version of me,or the truth and the real reflection of the truth? I thought this was quite interesting actually, but the coffee base was quite dark roasty, and the Shochu base was definitely not high quality as it was not so shochu aromatic regardless of what it was distilled from.I liked this approach and at only $55 it was a bargain. But they could surely use a better Shochu base. ~ 6.5/10.Horse Mackerel with Marinade ItalianJapanese style $100I really liked the balance of this fish dish and it was reasonably price. If any gripes,I thought the Aji fish was slightly too cured and starting to become dense.Actually despite my comments this was great great if it was just slightly fresher in texture and taste. Lovely~7.5/10.Grapefruit juice with Shochu サワーI like this style a lot.The Irori 酒處 version is a benchmark within Hong Kong, but surprisingly the Watami 和民 生搾り one is also not bad.The version here seemed slightly too weak. But the price was right.~6.5/10******************************I like this place. It was unpretentious. It reminds me of local Japanese joints in Japan with a suburban feel. But both the food and the drinks could be slightly better, but as usual most shops are quite defensive with suggestions. It is difficult to be a blogger nowadays, but having worked and held shares in a food business myself before,I know how it can be difficult to compromise. There is always a bloggers or customers viewpoint, and also the dilemma of having an Owner's personal view. But at the end of the day, customers will always win because they pay your wages. I also have to work hard to earn my salary.
