ROCKSCHOOL推介

Came for lunch, not many people as expected, the price was suspiciously lower than other pub foods. The restaurant was half empty when we arrived, so sat down on a four people table, but we were told to sit on a two persons table.Anyway, ordered two sets: pork chop with apple and mash, and fish with wasabi sauce.First came the bread with olive oil and vinegar, an italian starter which is quite a bonus because not many pubs serve it or occaisionally serve it.After finishing the bread, there were some crumbs infront of me, and the waitor cleaned it for me using my napkin, I was impressed he remembered I didnt have a napkin and gave me an extra one. Then came the salad and soup, and the waitor kept insisting ladies first, so placed my soup down first,Same with the mains, he always laid my plate down first, as well as trying to mesmerize me with his eyes!Back to the food, the carrot and coriander soup had lots of chopped coriander in it, and quite watery, but strong in coriander taste, as for the salad it contained yummy feta cheese. As for the mains the wasabi sauce did not taste of wasabi at all,it tasted of mint, and the pork chop was over cooked, but the mash was nice and buttery. Finally the dessert was the best, tasted as good as the banana muffin at banyan tree, but firmer and dense. The drinks were refillable too, however service can be slow sometimes, and the portions were a bit small too, even with soup, bread, mains, dessert and drink, the feeling was JUST full.

dec 10, 09,2人嚟lunch,叫咗 : 1) 麵包 (免費)凍咗,唔脆,仲"un"添留返嚟伴湯食罷了 2) 友人set (hk$58)i) beet & pumpkin feta salad w/balsamic dressingdressing唔多夠,所以無嘜味,淨喺南瓜片最甜,可以帶起番個味蕾 ii) basil pesto linguine w/sun dried tomato, zucchini & parmesan可能同友人傾得太投入,無影到個主菜都為意雖然pesto喺重香草味,但佢都煮得夠味如果linguine硬多少少就更佳 iii) dessert chocolate roulade cake w/fresh strawberry未見過呢個甜品名,好特別上網check有以下解釋roulade also refers to a SOUFFLtype mixture that's spread on a jelly roll pan, baked until firm but still moist, then spread with a savory or sweet filling and rolled up in jellyroll fashion.原來喺1/2件朱古力捲蛋,濕潤度好夠,質感又綿,朱古力味重上面嘅朱古力mousse醬帶點酒味全餐最好味的1道,真喺估佢唔到 iv) drink coffee友人話普通 3) my set (hk$58) i) cream of leek & watercress個湯太淡了.........
Dear editor: I think the name of the place should be rockschool although they use "skool" in their ads, thanks I was curious about what a $48 lunch deal entails, and since this place is pretty new, I decided to give it a shot. This place occupies the former Bulldogs and you would have thought that Bulldogs was still alive and well when you enter the place – the furnishings and furniture are the same except they have put fake air guitars on the walls, and there is a stage for live performances. It was therefore a minimalistic, quick switch and bait effort. I suppose this is the way to go given that they are all for sex, alcohol and rock n’ roll – which is all good, but I am sure the proprietor would want not to subject plush expensive décor to the mercy of the nightly harumscarum.Flyers downstairs (which doubled as the makeshift menu) told me that the set lunch included a free refill drink, soup/salad, main and even a dessert. Soup was a cream of broccoli (?) and salad was an interesting basmati rice with avocado offering. There were 3 choices of mains: Halibut with new potatoes, Thai beef with rice, and a penne with tomato sauce. Dessert was a chocolate mousse. All sounded very appealing indeed. The plot thickened.I had the salad – it was a cold basmati rice salad with chick peas, some diced red peppers, parsley and red onion, and 4 small slices of ripe avocado. The portion was quite generous. The soup I heard was creamy and had taste. “So far so good”, as they say! We each had a different main, and I opted for the fish. Teething problems meant that the wait between the appetizers and mains was about 25 minutes long, but the staff was very apologetic which helped to abate the annoyance, but unfortunately not the hunger. In terms of size, the mains paled in comparison with the appetizers – don’t know about you, but I always think that mains should be slightly bigger than appetizers. This should be obvious from the names of the dishes alone. Anyway, my small piece of halibut was fried, but very greasy and the oil had soaked through all the flakey bits of the fish. There were 2 new potatoes, halved into 4 pieces and placed in the corners of the dish, which was garnished with drops of sweet German mustard and a sprinkling of dried dill? I think the kitchen got carried away with sexing up the look of the dish at our expense, but I would have much preferred it if they had spent more attention on not overgreasing everything. Dessert was served in martini glasses on the other tables. But for us, the light runny mousse was all messily plopped into short tumblers instead. Why the difference? Even for a sweet fiend like yours truly, it was too cloying and unappetizing and I “used” it to take away the savoury taste of the main, but nothing more. Refills of our drinks was slow but the staff (especially the only male waiter there) did try to compensate with profuse and sincere apologies. Overall, it felt like the place is a school for many other things apart from sex, alcohol and rock n’ roll, but the principal is playing truant.A good place to get some good A/C and a quiet chat, but don't go if you are famished!
