This should be the first food critics after I stay in Macau. Macau’s economy is blooming in recent years due to a few large scale construction works, particularly casinos and resorts. I am also working on the largest resort development project in Macau, i.e. Cotai Strip of the Venetians. As Macau is far short of construction related professionals, one can expect that he can meet a few Hong Kong friends there. I met my excolleague while walking along the site office complex corridor one day. He was the customer service head of a software developer and gave a training session for the IT guys in that afternoon. Certainly, we went for lunch together. We had lunch in a bar & grill restaurant in the town centre of Taipa. It is heard that this pub is quite popular among the foreigners. There are bar tables as well as sofas and a private party room. Large LCD TVs are provided showing ESPN and STAR Sports. So I think it is a nice place for soccer fans. Decorative fans are hanged on the ceiling. When moving, the lights “twinkle” and may make you feel dizzy. There are not many choices on food as expected. Both of us had a set lunch with salad, sandwiches with ham and cheese, French fries and a free drink. It’s a conventional light lunch in western style, which was good for me to have a change from greasy Portuguese food. The salad was solely fresh veggies. I used to be a carnivore. But I was far short of veggies after moving to Macau. Fresh veggies became precious to me. The sandwiches were described as “the Chef’s choice”. But I didn’t think that it exactly described the sandwiches. In fact, the sandwiches were two pieces of toasted bread with 2 layers each of ham and cheese. The toasted bread was then wrapped up with toasted cheese again. The ingredients were simple and handy. And it was quite easy to make the sandwiches. BTW, as a cheese lover, that sandwiches fitted well with my appetite. The French fries were thick while the taste of potato was not rich. Notwithstanding that the lunch was described as a light one, the cheesy sandwiches were rich enough to fill up any empty space in my stomach. Luckily, it was neutralized by distilled coffee. It also helped getting rid of drowsiness. The set lunch was not cheap anyway. It cost us $65 each. I don’t think that the lunch should worth that much. If time could be rewinded, I would have had another place for lunch. In Macau, one has to be patient and knowledgeable for good places for food. Otherwise, it is not uncommon to spend more or less the same as that in Hong Kong.
