泰食廊推介
It's not that the food is bad, it's just not what I had expected from a restaurant tucked away on the 3rd floor of a random building in Wan Chai. There's the hardtomiss red sign on the outer wall of the building, bright red and distinct, screaming Thai Restaurant! and I had imagined it would be a cheap but hearty meal, but it turned out to be more sophisticated and upscale, at least that's what they are trying to do, I think. The manager/owner speaks great English and was courteous, and the other waiters were Thai and rather mute. There's an open kitchen but most of the view was blocked by 2 planks of wood, perhaps it's to stop the chefs from being distracted by the customers. The decoration was cheesy (flashing arrows pointing at the wrong direction to the entrance of the restaurant), comforting but unimaginative (use of raw dark wood for the furniture, floor and wall made it blend indistinctly into one another), and with a large flat screen TV on one corner showing the local soap opera, and a giant painting of the Buddha next to it. They were playing Bee Gees and other jazzy tunes which was slight incongruous to the meal we were having, but at least they tuned down the volume when we asked and tried to get the light dimmer just right for that relaxing ambiance. We ordered a bunch of dishes, starting with the papaya salad (looked a bit bland at first but surprisingly packed in a punch of spice), the small combo platter with chicken in pandan leaf, spring rolls, fish cakes and deep fried prawns wrapped in vermicelli (they might have taken the idea from the fancier dim sum places where I've seen a similar concoction). Then we had the massaman curry with beef brisket, which was a little too heavy on the coconut cream and deploringly few pieces of beef in it. The stir fried beef with veg was nicely flavoured with peppercorns and herbs, and the stir fried mixed veg was alright. The pad thai was one of the better dishes of the night, with a nice big prawn resting on the pile of noodles which had a good al dente texture, but tasted a little bland, with a suspicion that they used a little ketchup to give it that extra red glow. For desserts, we went for the layer cake (terrible, soft, goeey, lacked texture, taste and flavour), the sticky rice with mango (6 small pieces of mango with a scoop of rice that was overcooked, and tasted like a knobbly mush, and the coconut sauce was the not served on the side as I had requested), and the pumpkin pudding (oh my lord, they must have used a ham slicer to get it that thin, it was pitifully small in portion and about 3mm thick at the rind, whereas the picture in the menu was a deceivingly thick wedge of pumpkin). Dessert was a complete let down. They gave us a 10% discount coupon for use within the same month, but I don't think that would be used even if it offered a bigger discount.
