2017 Summer days in Hong Kong are almost gone but it is still humid and hot during the day. Being based in Kowloon during the day, I never get my smoothie bowl cravings satisfied in the day. Is it really not a popular thing in Hong Kong?Luckily, I had some time to travel to Hong Kong Island a few days ago and I came to this branch in Sai Ying Pun for my lunch. It took me a little while to find this place. When you Google the address, you would end up being on Third Street because that's the building address. However, you would actually need to turn to Centre Street, walk uphill for a bit and go up the stairs on your right side. It's just right next to that little rest area there.The store isn't big but it shows its menu and stock clearly. There isn't any seats indoor but you could sit right outside the store front. There are two cushion seats and three wooden small tables. For smoothie bowls, the menu is simple to read and decide on. There are three different types of base, including Chocolate for Breakfast, Berry Nice & Green Scream. Each of these smoothie bowls are $80 and comes with four toppings. The toppings are the common ones for smoothie bowls. You could ask the server for the fresh fruits available too!We ordered Chocolate for Breakfast & Berry Nice. The fresh fruits available for the day were blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. I prefer fresh fruits so I picked fresh blueberries, fresh strawberries, gluten free granola and goji berries for my toppings for Berry Nice. The toppings for Chocolate for Breakfast were frozen raspberries, banana chips, gluten free granola & almond silvers. After we placed our order, we sat outside to wait for it. Okay, it was hot outside and we were sweating so much already, but it wasn't a bad place to be sitting outdoor given we were actually just facing the rest area but not like the actual road with people and cars going by all the time.Finally the smoothie bowls are ready! I took a few quick pictures and immediately stuffed them into my mouth. The toppings were of good quality and the base was with good flavours and texture. I think the Chocolate for Breakfast is more flavourful and rich but Berry Nice definitely felt a lot healthier! The smoothie bowls were of generous portions and I almost couldn't finish mine (for lunch).I wished that there were indoor settings but it actually wasn't a bad experience sitting outside even though it was a boiling hot day. The atmosphere and the deliciousness made up for it. I would definitely come back to try some other combination of smoothie bowls or other goodies!

When I first saw smoothie bowls on IG, they looked delicious so I went there to get one but this shop is well hidden.It would have been easier if I got the MTR and walked down from one of the exits.On the menu, there are three smoothie bases and clearly the first and third were going to be my picks but I had to choose one.In the end I chose the chocolate base and for the toppings I picked strawberries, cocoa nibs, cinnamon and walnuts.It was really good they had cocoa nibs because not many places have it and the last time I had it was at Akrame paired with chicken.The bitterness went really well with the sweetness of the chocolate smoothie base and it had a hard crunch to it.Before I got my bowl, I assume I had to drink it with a straw like normal smoothies but the base here is slightly thicker which has to be spooned.$80 is a bit pricey but a good treat once in a while and the comment from my meat eating friend was that he would have it everyday if he was a vegan!

Morning, summer in Hong Kong grows back and forth and our passion about food and health will never be affected by that! I was so “obsessed” to those beautiful Instagram photos about smoothie bowls recently and I always complain smoothie bowl’s low exposure in Hong Kong, until I spotted a wonderful picture posted in Sassy Hong Kong, and the picture brought me here, Genie Juicery. (Admit!!! I’m exactly the kind of people who will be fished by eyecatching images!) It was so horrible to navigate myself to the shop in Sai Ying Pun for the first reason that I’m not familiar to this neighbourhood (don’t argue with me about how small Hong Kong is, but believe me, the buildings and neighbourhoods here are so condensed that you will definitely be lost many many time!), and reason No.2 that I was so distracted by the heat and humidity in this late summer season! (I will share the address and my personal tips in the end, no worries) They’ve 3 basic smoothie topped up with 34 toppings out of 14, 20%30% coverage shouldn’t be big pain for you to make decision. I really like the name “Green Scream” which recalls my memory of Jim Carrey’s The Mask. However, I’m a chocolatefan, and the name “Chocolate for Breakfast” is just too matched to the timing, plus it’s almost half calories than the other one, how can?! Berries are my morning routine when eating at home (maybe because of being an Asian, berries are kind of luxury in my childhood…) and it’s been so long time I haven’t grab granola (even gluten free!). N’ oh, don’t worry, that white stuff is coconut chips. It’s really chilled to your heart and as sweet as my lovely morning mood, but if I gonna do myself, definitely pour dozens of cacao! One thing I learnt from the guy in shop was to freeze your banana (which is the most key ingredient for a smoothie bowl) over night. I tried for this morning’s breakfast at home and it really gives me a ice bowl like those one from the shop! The only doubt I still have is, I’m not sure to freeze or froze my bananas… (I gonna try again tonight, to cut bananas in pieces and froze them) Guys, if you are interested to try your own smoothie bowl, or to grab a bowl from Genie Juicery, check here.
