Apparently there was a big "Japanese cheesecake wave" when it was new back in the 90's, and it made the news when people queued for hours just to try it. I have a very vague memory of Japanese cheesecake from having it in Italian Tomato a few years ago.So when I was browsing at Gourmet (grocery shop in Lee Gardens, owned by Watsons which happens to also have some connections with Ito Ya and distributes their cakes) and saw it on the shelf I decided to give it a try.What a steal! For $33 I got myself a whole cake (about 14" dia.). I opened the package, took a whiff: it's faintly cheesy and temptingly sweet, and I fell in love with it at the first bite it was pillowy soft, very moist, made a cute "spaaat" sound when I sandwiched it between my lips! And the sweetness is just right, with a slightly indulgent blend of milky and eggy taste to it. Especially love the top golden baked top where it is distinctly drier.Such are the simple joys of life! One of the many wonders of HK Japanese cheesecake in your local convenience store (they sell it in Circle K here in HK)!!
