I was on my way home and was planning to make buy some groceries to make dinner when it started to rain very hard outside. So, I ducked in here to see what there was to eat instead.A new Food Republic has opened in Causeway Bay. It has several of the usual other restaurants you see at other Food Republics but this was different and I had not tried before. It serves sukiyaki and you can choose various sets ranging from $58 to 108 where prices are dependent on the type of beef. All include meatballs and vegetables and choice of udon, ramen (aka instant noodle) or rice. You have a choice of four soup bases.I chose set C ($78) which included premium beef, meatballs and vegetables. I chose a sweet sukiyaki soup base and udon.At first, I thought, cool! I'll get a flame going like sukiyaki/shabu shabu that you can get at any of the other Chinese fast food establishments (like Cafe de Coral which is just upstairs). Instead what I got was a big bowl of udon and pot of hot sukiyaki soup with the meat and everything cooked for me. As any food court, it was pretty much self service.The udon was a fairly decent portion. It was ok.The sweet sukiyaki soup base was super sweet. So sweet, it tasted more like sugar. The "premium" beef was as I expected. Just regular beef. So tip for you .. don't waste money ordering anything over $58 as the beef just all tastes the same. There were two meatballs, a few strands of vegetables, enoki mushrooms and one shitake mushroom. Portion was quite a lot.Interesting is that I found a fake crab claw. Didn't taste very good.It wasn't very good. Then I excpected it to not be very good. But I had hoped it would at least be like the other Chinese fast food places that really do sukiyaki with the flames so I could cook the food myself like a mini shabu shabu for me. I won't return.
